GREAT GATHERING PAY LAST TRIBUTE AT FUNERAL OF WARREN WARD
____________________________________________________________
UNDISMAYED
"It is appointed unto men one to die."
So be undismayed though dimmed with
tears the eye.
The Great Architect, Ruler of Heaven
and Earth,
At whose supreme command we bow
from birth,
Has a Craftsman bidden his this day
His trowel, square and all tools to lay
away.
Though we are sorrowing, let us not cry,
But be undismayed by the edict from on
High.
God's nobleman was he, a Master of true
worth,
We'll miss him and his cheery mirth...
When they lay him away in warm mother
clay,
Raise him, Thou Lion of the Tribe of
Judah, we pray,
On the glorious Resurrection Day.
Trusting in Thee we are unafraid and
undismayed.
- Alonzo D. Hitchcock
Warren A. Ward, high in Masonic circles, and resident of Van Nuys since 1916, was burried Tuesday afternoon. Indicative of his great popularity and the place he had made for himself in the hearts of his townspeople, was the fact that one of the largest crowds of people ever gathered to do honor to a departed friend and fellow worker, filled to overflowing the Christian church and followed in 100 machines to the cemetary at Oakwood.
Masses of beautiful flowers in every soft hue, spoke another eloquent word of the love and respect felt for Mr. Ward by all who knew him. Lodges, organizations and his many friends both old and new, were represented. A great spray of pink rosebuds, delphiniums, lavender and pink sweet peas, completely covered the casket. A poem, "Undismayed," written by A.D. Hitchcock, for the occasion, was read. Mrs. C.E. Lane, accompanied by Mrs. Wetzstein, sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," and "Sometime You Will Understand." A brief and touching tribute was paid by Dr. Farquharson, and then the Masons took charge of their part of the service. Thomas Becannon, Past Master of Eastgate Lodge of Los Angeles, and Ecellent High Priest of the Royal Arch Chapter of Van Nuys, conducted. The pall bearers, both active and honorary, were the Past Masters of the lodge. A simple prayer at the grave was offered by Dr. Farquharson.
Warren Ward was born in Los Angeles in 1893, and ever since entering the business world 20 years ago, had been with the Bureau of Power and Light. At the time of his sudden illness and death he was construction superintendent in the San Fernando Valley. He was active in Masonic work, and at the time of his death was Worshipful Master of the lodge here, and Past Patron of the Eastern Star, in which his wife is worthy matron this year. He was ever mindful of the interests and happiness of his friends and of his wife, Prudence Ward, and his mother, Mrs. Abbie Ward. He is survived by them and by four brothers, Henry, Albert, Harry and Joseph, and by two sisters, Mrs. Abbie Melrose and Mrs. Hazel McCoy.
